Scott Hills is a Sr. Staff Scientist in the Information Management unit of Chevron Energy Technology Company. He provides consulting expertise in GIS, remote sensing, and data modeling to Chevron upstream and downstream operations worldwide. Leaving a position as Research Associate at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zürich, he began his Chevron career by accepting a research position in Remote Sensing at the company’s R&D lab in La Habra, California.
After working with GIS in Chevron for about 5 years, Scott was asked in 1996 to lead an enterprise GIS implementation for Chevron Nigeria Ltd, one of Chevron’s largest upstream business units. He has since contributed to enterprise GIS implementations in two other international upstream business units, and in Chevron Pipeline Company. Last year Scott led an effort to develop a strategic vision and implementation plan for GIS within Chevron, and is currently coordinating efforts to develop the global standards needed to support that implementation. He has been a member of the ESRI Petroleum User Group Steering Committee since 2002.
In 1995, Scott began experimenting with the pipeline data model which eventually became PODS, prototyped its application to upstream pipeline operations while on resident assignment in Nigeria, and after returning to the U.S., supported its implementation in Chevron Pipeline Company. He is currently a member of the project team developing a pipeline data management solution for Chevron Nigeria Ltd. Scott joined the PODS Association Technical Committee in 2003, was Chairman of that committee 2004-2006, and is now on the PODS Board of Directors.
Scott holds a Ph.D. in Oceanography from U.C., San Diego/Scripps Institution of Oceanography.
